Saving our wildlife one snare at a time

Illegal snares kill silently and indiscriminately. We find them, remove them and train others to do the same, free of charge to anyone who needs help.

About us

Snare Aware volunteers, faces blurred, gathered behind a bench piled with the coils of snare wire they removed

Snare Aware is a small volunteer non-profit organisation (NPO 251-337) focused on one problem: illegal wildlife snares.

We started in Amanzimtoti in 2020, when our founder went looking at how bad poaching was in a local nature reserve and came back with more than 20 snares. Today we travel the length and breadth of KwaZulu-Natal, removing snares from greenbelts, conservation areas and game reserves.

Seen a snare or signs of poaching?

One report about dogs caught in snares helped expose a much larger poaching operation. Every tip matters, and everything you tell us is treated confidentially.

What we do

  • Snare sweeps

We give up our free time to walk greenbelts, conservation areas and game reserves across the province, finding and removing snares before they kill.

  • Training and awareness

We provide specialist snare identification and removal training to anti-poaching units, and run talks and awareness events for the public.

  • Tracking and intelligence

Camera traps, tracking and a record of every snare we remove help us identify hotspots and patterns, and support the people who can act on them.

Keep us in the bush

We are volunteers and we never charge for our help. Donations cover running costs like fuel, so we can keep travelling to wherever snares are found.

Follow the work

We post from the field after every sweep. Following and sharing is one of the easiest ways to help more people recognise a snare.
